This project was focused on the development of a new Primary Care Centre to allow the GPs of the Nantgarw Road Medical Centre to re-locate out of two obsolete buildings into a new purpose built facility.
In addition to accommodation for the five GPs and their staff, the medical centre includes two consulting rooms for private GP use, a suite of rooms for the provision of community health services by the Health Board and a pharmacy.
The practice primarily services the needs of the patient population based to the west of Caerphilly. Consequently, we had to find a site, of suitable size, in the Trecenydd area of the town. After an extensive site search, we secured an excellent site on a commercial park which had been newly developed over the previous 5 years. Neighbouring properties include offices, a supermarket, a hotel and a care home. The new primary care centre benefits from its own car park, providing 47 car spaces. The site is also well served by public transport.
The building was designed to offer a contemporary presentation. Using a combination of external fabrics, the architect has designed a building that not only communicates its healthcare use, but also fits well into its local environment. Since opening its doors to patients, the building has received much acclaim. Internally, the accommodation has been set out so that it is both efficient and flexible. All the clinical accommodation is located on the ground floor with the first floor given over to staff administration, rest and meeting areas. The building is also designed to be energy efficient and a BREEAM Excellent rating has been achieved.
