Project description

This project involved the redevelopment of part of the Kidderminster Hospital site into a Primary Care Centre to provide state of the art facilities for two local GP Practices and their staff, enabling them to deliver a wide range of primary care services to the patient community.

In addition to the accommodation for 20 GPs and their staff, the building also provides accommodation for a physiotherapy practice, an ophthalmologist, visiting consultants and a pharmacy.

The site

A site central to the patient population was strongly preferred and connections with the local hospital were viewed as highly desirable. We worked extensively with the local Acute Trust to design a scheme that would fit into the current hospital site. Construction works adjacent to a working hospital set certain challenges and necessitated a phased development programme to ensure that there was no disruption to the hospital’s services.

The Primary Care Centre benefits from its own car park, providing 132 spaces, and local bus services are plentiful. Being located within the hospital environment affords many benefits, especially as the GPs manage one of the hospital wards.

The building

The building was designed to communicate its primary care use and at the same time to improve significantly the architectural character of its environment. Through the planning and construction process the scheme has received many plaudits. Internally, excellent use has been made of space which will present a fully up-to-date and very attractive working environment, and one that will allow the primary care service of Kidderminster to look to the future. The building is also designed to be energy efficient and a BREEAM Excellent rating was achieved.
