Project description

This development project was undertaken to relocate the Green Lane Surgery, a busy town centre practice, accommodating eight GPs, in Belper. In addition to the core accommodation for the GPs, as a registered training practice, the building also provides additional Deanery rooms for registrars, trainee GPs and medical students.

Other visiting clinicians and healthcare professionals provide a wide range of services including midwifery, district nurses, health visitors, counselling, physiotherapy etc. The scheme also incorporates a pharmacy.

The site

The Practice had for many years been located in a converted Victorian residential property in the heart of the town centre and the initial proposal was to relocate to a new building within the close vicinity. However, this presented a challenge and following an extensive site options appraisal, it was agreed that the preferred site, which met all the required criteria, was a greenfield site. Although situated 1.2 miles from the town centre, the site is adjacent to a large residential area and is easily accessible by a frequent local bus service.

The building

The Whitemoor Medical Centre is an attractive, light building built in a mixture of stone, brick and timber cladding which reflects and complements its rural surroundings. The building has received local design awards, whilst the GPs and their staff are delighted with their pleasant new working environment. The move to a modern, purpose built healthcare facility has enabled them to improve significantly service delivery for their c.13,500 patient population. The Medical Centre benefits from its own car park providing 70 spaces; local bus services are excellent.
